3 Tips You Should Know When Negotiating For Your Salary

Career Falcon 16 February, 2022

When you are offered a position of employment, you may have the opportunity to negotiate your salary. Companies often do this to keep things competitive within their industry. If you find yourself in the position to negotiate, there are 3 tips you should keep in mind.

Get Informed

Before negotiating, you need to be well-informed of salary trends for your industry. This will require that you do some homework on your own. Your employer will be well-informed, so only bring to the table legitimate information that can be backed up with facts.

Make The Case for Yourself

Simply asking for more money is not going to be enough to convince a prospective employer to give you more. You need to prepare yourself with reasons why you in particular deserve the salary you are requesting. You should back up your request with solid facts on your performance and what you have brought to past employers. It is very important, however, that you be honest with this part of your negotiation. Don't inflate your past performance. Not only will this not work in your favor, but it might discourage the company from hiring you altogether.

Stay Realistic

If you have done your research, and you know what a fair salary is for your position and your skills, don't expect much more than average. It is always best to shoot for more, but you must also know when it is time to wrap it and take an offer. Only turn down an offer that is widely varying from the norm. In most cases, you need the employer far more than they need you. This is especially true in a highly competitive industry.

Go into the negotiation with two numbers: the salary you would love to receive, and the salary you are willing to settle for. If the negotiation does not go your way, you should graciously accept your lower number.
